Opening Weekend – Ridgefield Art Walk 2016 (8/19 -9/11)

It was the opening weekend of the 2016 Art Walk, here in Ridgefield, Connecticut. On 8/19 (Fri), artists who were selected for this art event had opening receptions at all the restaurants, stores and the town hall in the downtown in the evening. The Ridgefield Guild of Artists, the organization my husband and I belong to and the organizer of this event, had such an enormous number of artist applicants that they needed to extend their deadline for the date to announce selected artists. It was quite an honor that my husband and I were both selected out of the harsh competition.
Some artists participated in this event last year and already knew how things worked. However, it was our first time, and it took a while until we figured out how to coordinate and discuss things between the business owners of our assigned restaurant and store and us. Our first obstacles were that we realized that the restaurant my husband assigned to went out of business, and that the owner of the store I was assigned to decided to sell the business and was gone for a long vacation. We immediately had to contact our guild and asked for other locations to exhibit our artworks. Fortunately, they had a good relationship with this frame store, the Frame Barn, where their members usually go to have their works framed. We could ask the owner of the frame store to give us some space to show our works. He was very generous and let us exhibit several pieces of our artworks and also other artists’ works.
The frame store was not on the main street of the downtown. Therefore, we did not have as many visitors as on the main street during the weekend receptions at the frame store. There were 5 artists altogether including my husband and me, and we all enjoyed exchanging information on other galleries, art shows and so on. Participating in an art show is not just for showing and selling artworks, but artists can also get to know other artists and obtain very useful information on anything related to art. The owner and all the other artists were very nice to my 4 year-old daughter, too. She enjoyed talking with them and also got very excited when some visitors or customers came in with their dogs. The frame store owner told me that my daughter kept entertaining everyone at the store including the dogs.
In addition to the frame store, we also had made an arrangement to show our works in front of the town hall on the main street just for the first two days. My husband and I took turns to sit in front of the town hall to show our works on Friday and Saturday. Many people stopped to look at our works. Some asked some questions and made nice comments. My husband told me that somebody asked if we had our own gallery. Oh yeah. We will! That is our dream. Hopefully, one at our house in Bethel, CT and another one in the nice countryside near Tokyo or Sendai in Japan. We are looking for a nice property in Japan, so please let us know if you know a nice farm house like “kominka”, which would be suitable to build a gallery café. It is also our dream to host such a nice community art event when we have our own gallery in Japan.
After we attended two receptions at the town hall and the Frame Barn, we went over to the last reception at the gallery of our guild. At the front porch, they had a musician playing a nice soothing music next to the stand to serve wine and sodas. It was very relaxing to sit and listen to the music on a chair with a glass of wine. Inside the gallery, there were excellent artworks of a great diversity in all kinds of mediums. Whenever I walk into their gallery, I always find some new ideas and techniques. This artist guild seems to be driven by innovative attitude towards art, which my husband and I really appreciate.

リッジフィールドアートウオーク２０１６ オープニングの週末
ここコネティカット州のリッジフィールドでは２０１６年アートウオークのオープニングの週末でした。８月１９日の金曜日の晩、ダウンタウンのレストランやお店やタウンホールでこのイベントのために選ばれたアーティストがレセプションをしていました。私の夫と私が所属する団体であり、このイベントの主催者でもある、リッジフィールドのアーティストギルドですが、このイベントに参加したいというものすごい数のアーティストの応募者が殺到し、選出されたアーティストを発表する日も延期しなければならないほどでした。そのような厳しい競争で私の夫と私両方ともが選ばれたというのはとても名誉なことです。
去年のこのイベントに参加したことのあるアーティストはなんとなく要領がわかっていましたが、私たちは初参加だったので、お店との交渉の仕方やあれこれがわかるまでちょっと時間がかかりました。まず最初に出くわした問題は夫が展示することになっていたレストランが潰れてしまったことと私が展示することになっていたお店のオーナーが店を売りに出すことに決め、長いバケーションに出かけてしまったことでした。私たちはすぐさまギルドに連絡し、他の展示する場所を求めました。幸運にもフレームバーンという額屋さんと付き合いがあり、ギルドのメンバーがよく作品を額に入れてもらっていたので、私たちの展示スペースを設けてもらえないかとお願いすることができました。オーナーはとても寛容で私たちの作品と他のアーティストの作品も展示させてくれると承諾してくれました。
その額屋さんはメインストリート沿いの店ではなく、週末のレセプションにもメインストリートほど人が来ませんでしたが、夫と私を含め５人のアーティストが参加し、他のギャラリーや他の作品展の情報などアートに関する情報のやり取りをして、楽しく過ごしました。作品展に参加するというのは自分の作品を展示し販売するためのものだけでなく、他のアーティストと知り合い、アートに関するとても役に立つ情報を得ることもできるものなのです。お店のオーナーさんも他のアーティストも私の４歳の娘にとてもよくしてくれました。娘もオーナさんと他のアーティストさん達とおしゃべりするのを楽しかったようで、さらに犬を連れたお客さんが来た時にはとても興奮していたようです。お店のオーナさんは娘が犬も含めて皆をずっと楽しませていたと私に教えてくれました。
額屋さんの他にダウンタウンのタウンホールでも最初の二日間自分たちの作品を展示できるようにしていました。金曜日と土曜日に交代で夫と私はタウンホールの前に座って作品を展示しました。多くの人が立ち止まって私たちの作品を見てくれました。質問したり、作品を褒めてくれる方々もいました。夫が自分たちのギャラリーがあるのかって聞いてきた人もいたよ、と言いました。ああ、そうですね。きっと。それが私たちの夢なのです。願わくば今住んでいるコネチカット州のベセルと日本の東京か仙台にも欲しいです。日本にいい物件がないか、ちょうど探しているところなので、ギャラリーカフェにするのにピッタリな古民家のような素敵なファームハウスがあったら教えてください。それから、もし日本でギャラリーカフェが持てたら、このような素敵な地域のアートのイベントを主催するのも私たちの夢です。
タウンホールと額屋さんでのレセプションの後、ギルドのレセプションに向かいました。ギルドの前ではワインやソーダのあるスタンドの横でミュージシャンが穏やかな音楽を奏でていました。ワインを傾け椅子に座って音楽を聴いているととてもリラックスできました。ギャラリーではありとあらゆる媒体の多様性に富んだ素晴らしい作品が見られました。ここのギャラリーに来るたびに新しいアイディアやテクニックを見出します。このギルドは革新的な姿勢に支えられているようです。夫も私もそれがありがたいと思っています。フレームバーンでの私たちの作品を含め全ての作品は９月１１日まで展示されています。イベントに関する詳細はこちらのウェブサイトをご覧ください。

Memorial Day Weekend in Jim Thorpe, PA

The Inn at Jim Thorpe
Memorial Day weekend is officially the start of summer vacation season in the United States. Last year, we spent the weekend in Camden, Maine. We still lived in Massachusetts back then, so it took only a couple of hours to get there. This year, however, we had to think of going to somewhere else because we live in Connecticut now. It would take 6 hours or so to get to Maine from where we live now. Jim Thorpe in Pennsylvania seemed to be just right for this kind of short trip.
The town is a popular tourist town in the northeastern Pennsylvania, and has been called the “Switzerland of America” because of the picturesque mountainous landscapes. My husband and I went on a hike there many times before my daughter was born. The Glen Onoko Falls trail was our favorite. We always stopped by at Molly Maguire’s Pub to have Guinness after the hike.
In addition to the beautiful nature, there are many restaurants, cafes, gift shops, B & Bs and Victorian style inns in the historic downtown area. Jim Thorpe is perfect for people who want to enjoy outdoor activities in the mountains and also strolling in the downtown for shopping and dining.
We stayed at the Inn at Jim Thorpe. It is a beautiful historic brick building and the interior decors at the lobby are worth seeing. My daughter was so excited when she walked in to the lobby and wanted me to take many pictures of her sitting in the classy antique chairs.
We arrived in the late afternoon, so we decided to spend the rest of the day in the downtown. My husband and I have a habit of stopping by at a second hand bookstore whenever we go on a vacation. We went to this second hand bookstore that we had been before. When I was looking at books in the bookshelves at the store, I found a cat walking in a narrow space between piles of books. I managed to pet this orange & brown cat a little bit and take one snap shot before it ran away to the back room. This is the painting I painted from the photo.

After the second hand book store, we found a new store we never saw before. The store sold original hand-made cards, printed with a vintage press machine. There were several vintage press machines in the back room and they looked more like museum exhibits. I was very impressed that such old machines were still in a good condition and producing such beautiful prints. I bought these lovely cats’ cards at the store.
We ended our downtown stroll at the restaurant of the Inn and had a nice dinner. I liked their St. Germain gin & tonic a lot! Even though the Inn was also known as a haunted hotel, we did not hear or see anything like that. We had a really good sleep.
On the second day, we went to Ricketts Glen State Park. This is a great place to go to avoid summer heat and stay cool because there are so many water falls on the trails. I packed swimsuit for my daughter so that she could go into the water and have fun. We did not go all the way and saw only three water falls. Whenever I go to scenic places like this, I always start searching for subjects to paint. I have never painted any water fall yet, so I think it will be my next subject matter. While my husband and daughter were busy splashing in the water, I was observing the landscape so that I could remember the colors, lights and shadows and the whole atmosphere afterwards. There were a couple of people who were just sitting on a big rock and enjoying the beautiful scenery with the water fall just like me. Some boys were diving into the water from the rock on the top and screamed for joy. When my daughter had enough fun and got cold from the water, we decided to walk back to our car.
On the Memorial Day, we went to Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine & Steam Train in Ashland. There used to be many coal mines around this area. This coal mine, Pioneer Tunnel, was owned and operated by the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company from 1911 to 1931. After the coal mine was shut down, it was renovated and converted into a tourist attraction including the steam trains.
We had a scenic train ride looking down the panoramic mountain view. It was gorgeous! I also liked the sounds of the hone of the steam train. My daughter was very excited on the steam train, but got a little bit scared when we had a tour inside the coal mine. It was too dark and cold for her. She needed to play in the playground after the coal mine tour to get warm and let her energy out! They had a really nice playground with wooden play trains. Of course, she slept so well in the car on the way back home.
Well, I think we did so many things during the holiday weekend. Summer just began. We will have a lot more fun! More beautiful landscapes to paint, too.

ペンシルバニア州、ジムソープでのメモリアルデイの週末
メモリアルデイの週末はアメリカでは夏休み開始の時期です。去年はメイン州のカムデンで過ごしました。まだマサチューセッツに住んでいたので、たった２、３時間で行くことができたのです。しかし現在はコネチカットに住んでいるので、今年はどこか他の場所を考えなければなりませんでした。今住んでいるところからメインに行くのに６時間かそれくらいかかるからです。ペンシルバニア州のジムソープはこのような短い旅行にはぴったりのように思えました。
ジムソープはペンシルバニア州の北東部の人気のある観光地で、美しい山の景色が見られるので、「アメリカのスイス」とも呼ばれました。夫と私は娘が生まれる前、よくジムソープにハイキングに行きました。グレンオノコ滝のトレイルは私たちのお気に入りでした。ハイキングの後はいつもモリーマグワイアのパブでギネスを飲みに立ち寄ったものです。
美しい自然の他に、古い町並みのダウンタウンには多くのレストラン、カフェ、ギフトショップ、B＆Bやビクトリアンスタイルのホテルなどがあります。ジムソープは山でアウトドアを楽しむだけでなく、ダウンタウンでショッピングや食事を楽しみたいという人にはぴったりなのです。
私たちはInn at Jim Thorpeというホテルに泊まりました。美しい煉瓦造りの古めかしい建物で、ロビーのインテリアは一見の価値があります。私の娘はロビーに足を踏み入れるととても興奮して、ロビーの上品なアンティークの椅子に座って何枚も私に写真を撮ってもらいたがりました。
午後遅く着いたので、その日はダウンタウンで過ごすことにしました。夫と私は旅行に行くといつでも古本屋に立ち寄ることにしていて、この日も以前行ったことのある古本屋へ行きました。本棚に並んでいる本を見ていた時、 本がたくさん積み重なった間のわずかな隙間を歩いている猫を見つけました。奥の部屋に逃げてしまう前に、なんとかこのオレンジと茶色の柄の猫をちょっとなでなでしてスナップ写真を撮ることができました。これがその写真を見て描いた絵です。
古本屋さんに寄った後、まだ見たことのない新しい店に行きました。そのお店では古いプレス機を使ってオリジナルの手作りのカードを販売していました。奥の部屋には幾つか年代物のプレス機が置いてあり、さながら博物館の展示品のように見えました。そのような古いプレス機が未だに使える状態であり、美しいプリントを刷り続けているということに感心しました。そのお店でこれらの可愛らしい猫のカードを買いました。
ダウンタウン散策の最後は滞在先のホテルのレストランに行き、おいしいディナーをいただきました。セントジャーメンジントニックというのがとても美味しかったです。このホテルは心霊スポットとしても知られているのですが、そのようなものを見たり聞いたりすることはなく、ぐっすり寝ました。
二日目はリケッツグレン州立公園へ行きました。ここは暑さから逃れて涼むのには最高の場所です。トレイルにたくさんの滝があるからです。娘が水遊びできるように水着も持って行きました。全部は回らず、３つしか滝を見ませんでした。このような景色の綺麗なところに来るといつも絵のモチーフを探してしまいます。私はまだ滝を描いたことがないので、次のモチーフは滝にしようかなと思います。
夫と娘が水遊びをしている間, 風景をじーっと観察していました。後で色や光や影や全体の雰囲気などを思い出せるようにです。私のように大きな岩に腰掛けて滝のある風景を楽しんでいる人が２、３人いました。何人かの男の子たちはてっぺんにある岩から飛び込んで歓声をあげていました。娘が十分遊んで寒くなった頃、駐車場に戻ることにしました。
メモリアルデイの日はアッシュランドにあるパイオニアトンネルという炭鉱と蒸気機関車があるところに行きました。このあたりにはかつて多くの炭鉱があったのです。このパイオニアトンネル炭鉱は１９１１年から１９３１年までPhiladelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Companyという会社が所有し運営していました。炭鉱が閉鎖されると、この炭鉱は修復され、蒸気機関車とともに観光用の場所に生まれ変わりました。
美しい山の景色のパノラマを眺めながら、蒸気機関車に乗りました。とても綺麗でした。汽笛の音もすごく気に入りました。蒸気機関車に乗っていた時は興奮していた娘ですが、炭鉱の中でツアーに参加していた時はちょっと怖かったようです。娘には炭鉱の中が暗くて寒すぎたようです。炭鉱ツアーの後娘はプレイグランドで遊んで温まりエネルギーを発散する必要がありました。木でできた遊具用の列車もある素敵なプレイグランドがあったのです。もちろん娘は帰りの車では爆睡でした。
この連休中随分たくさんのことをしたなあ、と思います。夏は始まったばかり。これからもっと楽しいことが待っています。それからもっと描くための美しい風景も！

“Daydream” – Landscape from My Imagination

This was my first attempt to paint a landscape from my imagination. I usually painted landscapes which I saw before using a reference photo or I simply painted landscapes on location. This time, however, the idea to paint tulips like a beautiful pattern came first and then I started brainstorming how I can paint tulips like that. I looked at some tulip photos on the Internet, and started experimenting some color combinations. I liked pretty much all the colors I saw, pink, violet, yellow, red and orange. I also came across some tulip patch photos and got an idea to paint a colorful tulip patch with a background in perspective.
The front left part was quite straight forward. I just wanted to paint a multicolored tulip patch which looked like a beautiful pattern. I applied liquid mask to the tulip patch area to paint green leaves first. I had to paint many dots when I was applying liquid mask. It was kind of fun. It was even more fun to paint the tulips using my favorite colors.
I had to think a little bit to decide what to do the right side lawn area. When I thought about the balance between the left side tulip patch and the right lawn area, painting another patch seemed to be the best. The tulip patch on the right side needed to look further away from the left side, so I applied very light washes there.
I initially planned to paint a stream in the middle part. However, I was not still so sure about the decision. I applied only very light washes there so that I could change my mind later. While I was working on the background, I decided that the middle part should be a path rather than a stream.
It took longer than I thought to paint a landscape that I have never seen. I had to make a lot more decisions on my own while I was painting. I was designing the landscape from scratch. Maybe I should keep painting like this and create more landscapes in my favorite colors out of my imagination.

「白昼夢」- 想像から生まれた風景
これが想像から風景を描いた初めての試みでした。これまでは以前見たことのある風景を参考写真を使いながら描くか、単にその場で風景を描くというのが常でした。しかしながら今回は美しい模様のようにチューリップを描いてみたいという考えがまず浮かび、それからそのようにチューリップを描くにはどうしたらいいか考えを巡らせました。インターネットで幾つかチューリップの写真を見て、幾つかの色の組み合わせを試してみました。ほとんど全ての色が気に入りました。ピンク、バイオレット、黄色、赤、オレンジ。また、幾つかチューリップ畑の写真も見つけました。そして奥行きのある背景をバックに色とりどりのチューリップ畑を描いてみようと思い立ったのです。
前の部分は割とすんなり行きました。とにかく美しい模様のように見える色とりどりのチューリップ畑を描きたかったのです。緑の葉を最初に描くためにリキッドマスクをチューリップ畑の部分に塗りました。リキッドマスクを塗っている時沢山の点を描かなければなりませんでした。割と楽しかったです。でもお気に入りの色でチューリップを描くのはさらに楽しかったです。右側の芝生の部分をどうするか決めるのには少し考えなくてはなりませんでした。左側手前のチューリップ畑と右側の芝生の部分ととバランスを考えるともう一つチューリップ畑を描くのが一番良いように思われました。右側のチューリップ畑は左側のチューリップ畑から離れているように見えるように色をほんの薄く塗りました。
最初は真ん中の部分に小川を描く予定でした。しかしまだどうしようかはっきりわからなかったので、後で変更できるようにその部分には薄く色を塗っただけにしました。背景に取り掛かっている時、真ん中の部分は小川でなく小道にしようと決めました。
一度も見たことのない風景を描くのは思ったより時間がかかりました。自分で決めなければいけないことが、絵を描いている間、沢山あったからです。一から風景をデザインしていたわけです。これからも自分のお気に入りの色で自分の想像でもっと色々な風景を作り出して描いてみようかな、と思います。

Acrobat – The First Time to See a Circus

I went to see a circus with my 4 year old daughter and my husband a couple of weeks ago. It was the first time for my daughter and me to see a circus live! I have never thought that it would be so exciting. It was also visually very appealing. The movements of acrobat artists looked even more dynamic with colored spot lights in the dark. I thought I should paint such an acrobat’s scene with a dramatic lighting in the background. I needed a lot of dark areas in the background so that the colored lights would look dramatic. Size 1 Hake brush works the best for me to paint background areas. I have Size 2 Hake brush, too but I like this smaller one better. To work on details, I use Menso brush. Both Hake and Menso brushes are Japanese brushes, which are used in traditional Japanese painting. These Japanese brushes became so popular and you can buy them everywhere now! I also heard that Chinese calligraphy brushes work well for watercolor painting. Maybe I will give it a try soon.

アクロバット – 初めて見たサーカス
数週間前、４歳の娘と夫とともにサーカスを見に行きました。娘と私はサーカスを生で見るのはこれが初めてでした。こんなに面白いとは思ってもみませんでした。視覚的にも大変魅力的でした。アクロバットの方々の動きが暗がりの中で照らされた色つきのスポットライトによって一層ダイナミックに見えました。劇的な照明を背景にそのようなアクロバットの場面を描こう、と思いました。色つきの照明が劇的に見えるように背景に暗い部分がたくさん必要でした。背景の部分を塗るのに、私は１号の刷毛が一番使いやすいです。２号のサイズも持っていますが、この小さいサイズの方が好きです。細かい部分には面相筆を用います。刷毛も面相筆も日本の筆で伝統的な日本画で使われます。これらの日本の筆はとても人気で今ではどこでも買うことができますね。中国の書道筆も水彩画に良い、と聞いたので、そのうち試してみようかと思います。

Dandelions on the Sidewalk in Camden, Maine

This was my first attempt to paint dandelions. I found these dandelions on the sidewalk of the shopping street in Camden, Maine in last May. I was spending a holiday weekend in Camden with my family and it was still a little bit chilly there. When I was walking along the street, these dandelions caught my attention right away. They were bigger than regular dandelions and looked eager to absorb energy from the sunlight by bending themselves towards the sun. Maybe people in Maine keep dandelions as they are rather than getting rid of them as weeds. It is very sad that they are often treated as bad weeds especially in a lawn garden. Please take a moment and enjoy these lovely yellow flowers in full of life.

メイン州、カメデンの舗道で見つけたタンポポ
タンポポを描くのはこれが初めての試みでした。去年の5月にメイン州のカメデンのショッピングストリートの舗道でこれらのタンポポを見つけました。家族で３連休の週末を過ごしていたのですが、メインではまだちょっと寒い時期でした。通りを歩いていて、これらのタンポポに目を惹かれました。普通のタンポポより大ぶりで、太陽の方に全身を傾けて、懸命に陽光を吸収しているように見えました。おそらくメインの人たちは雑草としてタンポポを除去したりせず、タンポポをそのままにしてあげているのでしょう。とても悲しいことですが、特に芝生の庭などではタンポポが悪い雑草として扱われていますね。ではしばしの間、この生命力にあふれた可愛らしい黄色い花を見て楽しんでください。

Wisteria

I just felt like painting another Japanese flowers. Wisteria can be typically seen in larger parks in Japan. When I was a child, I liked walking under a wisteria trellis to smell the sweet flower fragrance. It was a little more work than I thought to paint these flowers. I had to paint many layers of colors to depict the texture of the flowers and the mysterious shadows in the background. To get such a bluish purple for the wisteria flowers, I mixed Phthalo Turquoise and Opera (my favorite pink!). I also used Violet for shadows. In this painting, Phthalo Turquoise was the hero. I used the color to paint the leaves, too. It really went well with the purple colors of the flowers. I think I am going to enter this painting in an upcoming spring art show. 藤の花
また別の日本の花が書いてみたくなりました。藤の花は日本ではよく大きな公園で見られます。子供の頃藤の花の甘い香りがかぎたくて藤棚の下を歩くのが好きでした。この花を描くのは思ったより大変でした。花の質感やミステリアスな背景の影を表現するのに何層も色を塗り重ねなければならなかったのです。藤色の青っぽい紫を出すためにはフタロターコイズとオペラ（大好きなピンク色！）を混ぜました。影にはバイオレットも使用。この絵ではフタロターコイズがヒーローでした。葉っぱの色もフタロターコイズ。藤の花の紫の色にもフタロターコイズはよく合いました。これから始まる春の作品展にこの絵を出展してみようと思います。幸運を祈っていてくださいね。

Watercolor Pencil Sketches from 90’s

I happened to find my old sketchbook and a set of 12 watercolor pencils I bought in England when I was still a college student. Oh my, it is over 20 years ago! I was an English major student in Japan and participated in an overseas seminar in England.
I was not much of a painter back then. Instead of buying a watercolor painting kit, I bought a set of watercolor pencils. It was easier than painting. Looks like I was interested in drawing portraits even though I primarily paint landscapes and still life in watercolor now.
Was this my very first self-portrait? Maybe, yes. I kind of like it.
I also drew my favorite actresses. Juliet Binoche and Susan Sarandon. I still like them a lot.
These were very interesting findings from my past. I hope you will enjoy looking at my humble beginning.

私が大学生の時代にイギリスで買った古いスケッチブックと１２色の水彩鉛筆のセットをたまたま見つけました。ああ、なんと２０年以上も前のものです。私は日本で英米語学科の学生で、イギリスで行われた海外セミナーに参加していたのです。
私はそんなに大して（筆を使って）絵を描いていませんでした。水彩画の道具は買わずに水彩鉛筆のセットを買ったくらいですから。筆を使って描くより簡単です。今は風景画や静物画を中心に水彩で描いていますが、昔は人物画を描くのに関心があったようです。
これは私が初めて描いた自画像でしょうか？多分そうでしょう。結構いい感じです。
好きな女優も描いていますね。ジュリエット・ビノシュとスーザン・サランドン。今も大好きな女優さんです。
私の過去からの面白い発見でした。皆さんも楽しんでいただけるといいですが。

Art as a Therapy – Beyond the Sorrow

“Beyond the Sorrow”
It is finally spring. For me, it is time to get ready for spring art shows. I usually enter something that fits the season of the art show. In Japan, cherry blossoms are the first thing that comes to people’s mind when they think of spring. At this time of the year I always remember and long for the beauty of cherry blossoms I saw in many places in Japan.
When I started painting cherry blossoms this year, I felt like painting them a little differently. In stead of painting an actual cherry blossom viewing scene as a happy memory, I wanted to paint them so that the painting would depict various feelings I had for the last couple of years after I left Pennsylvania. We were always in transition for the last 3 years because we had to move 3 times during the 3 years due to my husband’s work.
When we finally moved to our new house in Connecticut in January, we were all excited and cerebrated our new home. However, when I saw cardboard boxes piling up like Great Wall of China in our new house, I suddenly felt very tired and depressed. I said to myself, “Oh, no. I have to start everything from scratch again.”
When I was very sad and lonely after we moved away from Pennsylvania, where we all felt so at home, I often thought of Tohoku disaster evacuees who had to move away from their beloved hometown and started a new life in a different place where they had no contacts or connections. Even though we never lost our house or family members, I thought that the sadness and the loneliness I was feeling would be pretty similar to theirs. It is very hard to be a “stranger” all the time. The word, “rootless”, would describe it the best.
It has been always painting that worked like a therapy whenever I felt depressed. I painted this work, “Beyond the Sorrow”, hoping to heal my wounded heart. Even though I was not completely healed yet, I could feel that I am on the way to recovery from all the accumulated stress over the last 3 years just while I was painting it. The title, “Beyond the Sorrow”, came from part of the lyrics of the song, “Hana wa Saku”(Flowers Will Bloom), which was created to support the recovery of survivors of the 3.11 Tohoku Disaster. I was very touched especially by these phrases in the song.

I haven’t really reached the point to say confidently, “Flowers will bloom”. It is still a question form, “Will flowers bloom?” I would just need to keep painting so that I can be healed and sing the song with more confidence.

セラピーとしてのアート— 悲しみの向こう側に
ついに春になりました。私にとっては春の作品展に向けて準備をする時期。作品展にはいつもその季節に合ったものを出展しています。日本では春といえば、まず人々の心に思い浮かぶのは桜。毎年この時期には、自分が日本の様々な場所で見た桜の美しさを思い出し、想いを馳せるのです。
今年桜の絵を描き始めた時、ちょっと違ったふうに桜を描いてみたいと思いました。実際のお花見の場面を楽しい思い出として描くのではなく、ペンシルベニアを離れてからの数年間に抱いた様々な感情を絵に表してみたいと思ったのです。この三年間は常に一つの場所から違う場所へ移行中という感じでした。夫の仕事のため、三年間で三度も引っ越したのです。
1月についにコネティカット州の新しい家に引っ越した時、家族皆、新しい家に大喜びしました。しかし、新しい家でまるで万里の長城のように高く積み重なったダンボール箱を見た途端、私は突如疲労感に襲われ、気分ががっくり落ち込みました。「ああ、やだ。また一から全てやり直しだ。」と心でつぶやきました。
慣れ親しんだ場所、ペンシルバニアを離れ、とても辛くて寂しかった時、東北の震災で、自分たちの愛する土地から避難し、縁もゆかりもない場所で新しい生活を始めなければならなかった被災者の方々のことがよく思い浮かびました。自宅を失ったわけでも、家族を失ったわけでもありませんが、私が感じている辛さや寂しさは被災者の方々のものととても近いだろうと思いました。ずっと「よそ者」でいることは大変辛いことです。「根無し草」という言葉が一番ぴったりかもしれません。
これまでも落ち込んだ時はいつも絵を描くことがセラピーの役割を果たしました。この作品、”Beyond the Sorrow” (悲しみの向こう側に)も傷ついた自分の心を癒したいと思って、描きました。まだ完全に癒されたわけではありませんが、絵を描いている間、この三年間で積もり積もったストレスから回復の方へ向かっていると感じることができました。”Beyond the Sorrow” (悲しみの向こう側に)というタイトルは震災復興を支援するために作られた歌「花は咲く」の歌詞の一部から来ています。

この後、「花は、花は、花は咲く」と続きますが、私はまだ自信を持って「花は咲く」と言えるようになるまでは至っていません。まだ、「花は咲くだろうか？」という疑問形です。私が癒されこの歌をもっと確信を持って歌えるように、とにかく絵を描き続けなくてはなりませんね。

Snow Landscape Paintings, Inspired by the Garden Views of Our Former House in Massachusetts

This is the very first blog in 2016. Belated Happy New Year! It has gotten very cold here in Connecticut. The temperature went down to 14 Fahrenheit (or minus 10 Celsius) a couple days ago. I could not resist and rushed to the North Face store to buy a nice down jacket. The store was full of people. North Face down jackets are very expensive. However, this is a matter of survival! You cannot be cheap when it comes to winter coats if you live in a super cold state like Connecticut.
This cold temperature reminded me of the last winter I had in Massachusetts. It was such a memorable winter both in a good way or a bad way because it was the year when Boston broke the 20-year snowfall record with 108.6 inches or 2.76 m (the total snowfall of the winter 2014-2015)! Day after day, we had so much snow, which almost reached my waist. My husband always put on a full-face mask and covered his entire body with black snow gears just like an Al-Qaeda solder before he started running our snow blower. I still saw snow in our garden even in April! As a result, I painted many snow landscapes during the winter.
I usually painted in our sun room because I could see the best views of the garden through the large windows. There were three Christmas trees in our garden. Behind the Christmas trees stood very tall oak trees and pine trees. Because of those trees, we always had so many wild birds in our garden. My husband set bird feeders everywhere in our garden to keep attracting many birds even in winter.
The sun room was not heated or air conditioned. In winter we had a special Japanese heating device, called “kotatsu” a low wooden table frame covered by a heavy blanket. There was a table top on the blanket and underneath is a heat source, built into the table itself. It was a great pleasure to watch snow falling and paint the snow landscape right in front of me, sitting in the warm kotatsu. My cats also enjoyed the kotatsu and comfortably stretched their bodies inside it while I was painting. Here are a couple of paintings and the photo of the real scene during such kotatsu painting sessions in the sun room.
Instead of enjoying the garden views in the sun room, my cats enjoyed “bird watching” mostly in our dining room because there was a scratch pole right in front of the windows there. My cats liked sitting on the top of the scratch pole and watching birds eating food from the bird feeders. It was such a sweet moment to watch our cats at the window, and it helped me forget all my stress from the heavy snow. Here are the painting and the photo of such a sweet moment.
Considering the amount of snowfall and the length of the winter time, it is amazing that I could still have fun and be productive in painting while I was in so much stress at the same time. Well, I think it is because I could see things through my artist’s eyes and it could change the stressful snow scene into a romantic snow landscape. Being an artist sometimes helps in a stressful occasion like this. I hope I can still have so much fun in our new house in Bethel, Connecticut. We are going to move away from our temporary place in Danbury and finally move into the real home next month! I just can’t wait. I will keep painting nice views from our new house. Please stay tuned!

雪の風景画、マサチューセッツの家の庭にインスパイアされた作品たち
2016に入ってまさに初ブログ。遅ればせながら新年明けましておめでとうございます。ここコネティカットでも大分寒くなりました。２、３日前は零下１０度くらいまで下がり、良いダウンジャケットを買いに思わずNorth Faceのお店に駆け込む始末。お店は混んでいました。North Faceのダウンジャケットはとても高価ですが、これはサバイバルできるかどうかの問題です。コネティカットのような極寒の州では、冬用のコートでケチってはなりません。
寒くなってきて、ふと、去年マサチューセッツで過ごした冬を思い出しました。いい意味でも悪い意味でも、思い出深い冬でした。何と言っても、２０年間続いた最大積雪量を破り、その冬の積雪量が2.76 m（２０１４から２０１５までの冬の期間）という記録的な豪雪となったからです。来る日も来る日も私の腰に届くほどの大雪でした。私の夫は除雪機を運転するのに時はいつもフルフェイスのマスクに全身黒ずくめの防寒着でまるでアルカイダの兵士のような格好をしていました。４月になっても庭には雪が残っていました。というわけですから、その冬の間にたくさんの雪の風景画を描きました。
絵はサンルームで描くのが常でした。窓が大きく庭の景色が一番良く見える場所だったからです。庭にはクリスマスツリーが3本立っており、その後ろには大きな樫の木と松の木がありました。それらの木があったおかげで、いつもたくさんの野鳥が庭に訪れました。私の夫は冬でも鳥がやってくるように庭のあちこちに鳥の餌箱を吊るしました。
サンルームは暖房も冷房も入っていなかったので、冬はこたつを使っていました。暖かいこたつに入って、雪が降るのを眺め、目の前の雪景色を描くのは大きな喜びでした。うちの猫たちもこたつが好きで、私が絵を描いている間、こたつの中で気持良さそうに体を伸ばしておりました。こちらがそのようなサンルームのこたつで描かれた絵と実際の風景の写真です。
サンルームからの眺めを楽しむ代わりに、うちの猫たちは大抵ダイニングルームの窓からバードウォッチングを楽しんでいました。ダイニングルームの窓のそばに爪とぎポールが置いてあったからです。猫たちは爪とぎポールの上に座って、鳥が餌箱から餌を食べているのを見るのが好きでした。猫たちが窓辺に座っている様子を見て、とても甘いひとときに浸れました。大雪によるストレスを忘れさせてくれました。こちらがその甘いひとときの絵と写真です。
あの雪の量と冬の長さを考えると、凄くストレスを抱えていたにも関わらず、よくもまああんなに楽しく絵をせっせと描き続けられたものだと思います。まあ、おそらく私がアーティストの目でものを見ることができたからかな、と思います。アーティストの目で見れば、ストレスの溜まるような雪の場面もロマンティックな雪景色に。アーティストであることはこのようなストレスの溜まる状況では役に立つこともありますね。コネティカットのべセルの新しい家でも大いに楽しめたらいいな、と思います。来月ダンベリーの仮住まいを出て、ついに本当の家に引っ越します。楽しみで、待ちきれません。新しい家でも、素敵な眺めを描き続けます。どうぞお楽しみに！

Christmas in West Chester, Pennsylvania

Time seems to fly faster in December. While I was participating in some December art shows in Connecticut, I was also busy with Christmas shopping and planning what to do during the holidays. In addition to the art shows in CT, a couple of my paintings were also on display until 12/22 in this show in West Chester, PA, “$300 and Under” , at Chester County Art Association (CCAA). After the show was over, I had to pick up my art work at the CCAA gallery. The pick-up day was right before the Christmas Eve. “Why don’t we spend our Christmas in West Chester, PA?” I suggested to my husband and my daughter. They agreed right away! There are many nice stores and restaurants in the downtown of West Chester. Our favorite hotel, Hotel Warner, is located in downtown. I knew that my husband wanted to see his friends in the area and my daughter liked the swimming pool at the hotel so much when we were there before. I booked two nights at Hotel Warner from 12/23.
Packing for this holiday trip took extra efforts because my husband and I decided to sneak all the Christmas gifts into our hotel room. Yes, we just wanted to do our best to surprise our 4-year-old daughter. I also had to secretly fill our stockings with staffers and hang the stockings on the curtain rail in our apartment in CT before we hit the road. I just wanted my daughter to have another surprise in our apartment when we come back from our trip.
On the way to PA, I received e-mail from the art association and it said that one of my paintings, “Bowtie Murli”, was sold. The art show featured mostly small works because the prices had to be $300 and under. However, “Bowtie Murli” wasn’t just a small work. It was something special; a painting of my dearest male cat (Murli) wearing a colorful bowtie. I always thought that such a bowtie would look good on him even though I never put any bowtie on him for real.
It was raining hard throughout the trip from CT to PA and it was still raining when we arrived at the CCAA gallery in West Chester. As a student I knew the original building. The expansion and renovation constructions started after I had to stop going to art classes because I had to move out of the area. I wanted to take pictures of the new CCAA building from outside. Unfortunately, I could not do so because of the rain. When I picked up my art work, the lady at the gallery kindly wrapped it in plastic bags so that my painting would not get wet. I looked at some art works which were not picked up by the artists yet. I saw several red stickers (it means “Sold”.). It must have been a successful holiday show! I wanted to spend more time to see other artists’ works. However, my daughter wanted to go potty urgently. We had to go to our hotel in a hurry!
Hotel Warner also opened after we moved out of PA. It was originally a historic movie theater, Warner Theater, and was renovated into a hotel after it ended its history as a movie theater. The hotel is nicely located in the middle of the downtown. Everything is within a walking distance, boutiques, gift stores, restaurants, bars, galleries and so on. When I lived in Downingtown, PA (a neighboring town of West Chester), I used to enjoy “First Friday” in the downtown of West Chester. On every first Friday night, they had the galleries, stores and restaurants open until late. I had so much fun walking in one gallery after another and had a nice dinner after the “gallery hopping”. First Friday was the most popular in summer. It was just like a big party all through the downtown. In December, there is not much going on. However, the downtown still has a lot of charms because there are many historical buildings with very unique personalities. They even look nicer with beautiful Christmas decorations.
We had very good luck this Christmas. Even thought I wasn’t’ really sure if we would find any restaurant open on Christmas Eve in West Chester, there were some restaurants open on that night. Our original plan on Christmas Eve was that we would go to the Christmas Village in Berks County. However, the weather was not so great and we were pretty tired after shopping at the mall and seeing our friend during the day. In stead of going to the Christmas Village, we decided to go to one of our favorite restaurants in West Chester, Kooma. It is a very popular Japanese restaurant in this area. It was just 30 seconds walk to the restaurant from our hotel. Although their sushi is more like an American style, they make nice sushi rolls. They also have nice Korean dishes such as Bibimpap. Stone Pot Bibimpap is our most favorite.
Another lucky thing was that we found a nicely wrapped box in front of the door at the hotel on the Christmas morning. There was a note attached to the box, “For the Little Girl”. My daughter’s face beamed when she saw the box and she wanted to open it right away. When we went to the breakfast room, one of the hotel staff told me that she left the Christmas present in front of the door for our daughter. I thanked her very much for her kindness. Other older boys also received Christmas gifts, which were lying under the Christmas tree in the breakfast room. I was very impressed by their heart-warming services on Christmas.
I couldn’t believe that it is almost 3 years since we moved away from the area in PA because I still felt so at home when I came back here. West Chester is also a very special place for me. It is where my art began and also where I gave birth to my daughter (she was born at the Chester County Hospital there). I feel so grateful that we have a special place like this. Earlier next year, we are going to move from our apartment in Danbury to a new house in Bethel, which is a neighboring town of Danbury. I hope that this new place will become another special place for us like West Chester, PA in the future.

ペンシルバニア州ウェストチェスターのクリスマス
１２月は時間が飛ぶように過ぎてしまいますね。コネティカット州で幾つかの作品展に参加する傍ら、クリスマスのプレゼントを買ったり、ホリデイシーズンの予定を立てるのに忙しい日々を送っていました。コネティカットでの作品展の他に、ペンシルバニア州ウェストチェスターにあるChester County Art Association (CCAA)での作品展、“$300 and Under”, にも12/22まで作品を展示していました。この作品展が終了後、作品をピックアップしなければなりませんでした。ピックアップの日はクリスマスイブの前日でしたので、「クリスマスをペンシルバニアのウェストチェスターで過ごすのはどう？」と夫と娘に尋ねると、二人とも即賛成！ウェストチェスターのダウンタウンにはたくさん素敵なお店やレストランがあり、私たちのお気に入りのホテルワーナーもダウンタウンにあります。夫はその地域に住んでいる友達に会いたがっていたし、娘もそのホテルのプールで遊ぶのが好きなのです。12/23から二晩ホテルに予約を入れました。
今回の旅行の荷造りは一苦労しました。というのも夫と私はクリスマスプレゼントをこっそりホテルの部屋に持ち込もうと決めたからです。ただ４歳の娘をびっくりさせたいという一心で。出発する前、コネティカットのアパートの部屋のカーテンレールにプレゼントを詰めたストッキングをこっそり吊るしておかなければなりませんでした。旅行から帰ってきた時にまた娘を驚かせたかったのです。
ペンシルバニアに行く途中で、私の作品の一つ「蝶ネクタイのムリィ」が売れたというメールをもらいました。その作品展は値段が＄３００かそれ以下でなければならなかったので、もっぱら小品ばかりでした。しかし「蝶ネクタイのムリィ」はただの小品ではありませんでした。それは特別な作品で、カラフルな蝶ネクタイをした私の最も親愛なるオス猫ムリィの絵でした。一度も本当には着けたことがないのですが、いつもこんな蝶ネクタイがムリィに似合うだろうな、と思っていたのです。
コネティカットからペンシルバニアに着くまでずっと激しい雨が降り続き、ウェストチェスターのCCAAのギャラリーに到着した時もまだ雨が降っていました。私が生徒だった時代はまだ建物が古くて、私が引っ越しのためクラスを辞めた後、拡張、修復工事が始まったのでした。新しいCCAAの建物の写真を外で撮りたかったのですが、残念ながら雨で出来ませんでした。作品をピックアップしに行った時、ギャラリーの女性が作品が濡れないよう親切にナイロンの袋に包んでくれました。まだアーティストがピックアップしていない作品を見ると、幾つか赤いシール（売れたという印）が貼ってありました。きっとこの作品展は成功だったのでしょう！もっと他のアーティストの作品も見たかったのですが、娘が急にトイレに行きたくなったので、急いでホテルに行かなければなりませんでした。
ホテルワーナーも私たちが引っ越してからオープンしました。もともとは歴史あるワーナーシアターという映画館だったのですが、映画館としての歴史に幕を降ろすとホテルに改装されました。ホテルはダウンタウンの中心に位置し、ブティック、ギフトショップ、レストラン、バー、ギャラリーなど全て歩いていける距離です。ペンシルバニアのダウニングタウン（ウェストチェスターの隣町）に住んでいた頃、ウェストチェスターのダウンタウンのファーストフライデイによく行きました。毎月第一金曜日の夜ギャラリーやお店やレストランが遅くまで開いていました。あちこちのギャラリーに立ち寄り、「ギャラリーのはしご」を堪能した後、美味しいディナーを食べたものです。ファーストフライデイは夏に一番人気がありました。ダウンタウン全体で大きなパーティをやっているかのようでした。１２月はちょっと静かですが、独特の個性を持った歴史的な建造物が多く、やはり魅力溢れる街並みです。美しいクリスマスの飾りでさらに素敵に見えます。
今年のクリスマスは幸運に恵まれました。クリスマスイブに開いているレストランがウェストチェスターにあるかどうかよくわからなかったのですが、幾つか空いている店がありました。本当はクリスマスイブにはバークスカウンティにあるクリスマスビレッジに行くつもりだったのですが、天気もあまり良くなく、モールで買い物したり友人と会ったりした後で私たちも疲れていました。そこで、代わりにウェストチェスターのお気に入りのレストランの一つであるKoomaに行くことにしました。この辺りではとても人気があるジャパニーズレストランなのです。ホテルから歩いてたったの３０秒でした。お寿司はアメリカンスタイルなのですが、巻物のお寿司が結構いけます。ビビンバのような韓国料理もあり、石焼ビビンバは私たちの一番のお気に入りです。
もう一つラッキーだったのはクリスマスの朝にホテルのドアの前に綺麗に包装された箱が置いてあったことです。小さなメモが添えてあり、小さなお嬢ちゃんへ、と書いてありました。娘の顔はパッと輝き、すぐに箱を開けたがりました。朝食の部屋へ行くとホテルのスタッフの一人が娘のためにドアの前にクリスマスプレゼントを置いておいたと言うのです。私は丁重にお礼を言いました。他の年上の男の子たちも朝食の部屋の中のクリスマストリーの下に並んだプレゼントを受け取っていました。ホテルの心温まるクリスマスのサービスに大変感心しました。
引っ越してからもう３年近くなるというのが信じられませでした。やはり今でもここに戻ってくるととてもホッとするのです。ウェストチェスターは私にとってとても特別な場所です。私のアートの始まりの場所であり、娘を出産した場所でもあります。私たちにこのような場所があるということはとてもありがたいことです。来年の初めにダンベリーのアパートからべセルという隣町の新しい家に引っ越すことになっています。この新しい場所が私たちにとってペンシルバニアのウェストチェスターのような特別な場所になるといいなと思います。
２０１６年も良い年になりますように！

My First Appearance in Connecticut-Art Show at Mark Twain Library

It is December! Yes, it is the holiday season and time for Christmas shopping. Therefore, there are many art shows for sales in December. After I moved to Connecticut from Massachusetts, I started searching for local art shows so that I can “debut” here in Connecticut.
The first one I found was this annual art show (12/5 – 12/13) at Mark Twain Library in Redding. The name, “Mark Twain” immediately drew my attention because I was a fan of his “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”. When I looked at the library website, I learned that Mark Twain spent the last part of his life in Redding. You can see why he enjoyed his life so much in this town once you look at the beautiful landscapes. It is truly a nice countryside and it is very close to New York.
Artists could enter two pieces for the show and also portfolio (bin sale). The challenge I had to face to enter my art works for this show was that most of the paintings I had painted earlier for future shows were sent to our long-term storage when we moved to our temporary place (apartment) in CT from our former house in MA. We moved in the mid October so I had only a couple of weeks to prepare for the juried exhibition without those paintings.
Our apartment is located in a very scenic location in Danbury and we live on the 5th floor. When I first walked into to our rooms, I was struck by the beautiful paranomic view from the windows. A little while after the move, I had to come up with a subject for the art show. ”Yes”, I said to myself, “This view is going to be my subject to paint for the art show at the library!” This is how I started painting my “Danbury Sunset”. It was juried into the art show together with the other painting, “Lying Murli”, which I had painted earlier in MA.
I was very impressed by the nice interior decors of the library! The way they displayed the art works looked also very professional. All the art works which were juried into the show were outstanding. I saw a variety of medium and styles and each art work was high quality in in its own way. Now I learned that this is an affluent area with people who have keen eyes on art.
There are many art organizations and art exhibitions in CT and NY. I also started showing my art works at my old art association in West Chester, Pennsylvania. My endeavor to polish my painting skills and seek more opportunities to exhibit my art works will still continue. Please stay tuned!

マークトェイン図書館の作品展−コネティカット州で初めての出展
１２月といえばホリデーシーズンそしてクリスマスショッピングですね。ですから、１２月は展示販売する作品展が多いのです。マサチューセッツ州からコネティカット州に引っ越してきてから、この州で「デビュー」するために地元の作品展を探していました。
最初に見つけたのがこのレディングの作品展(12/5 – 12/13) でした。マークトウェインという名前にまず惹かれました。「トムソーヤの冒険」のファンだったからです。ウェブサイトを見て、彼が晩年をレディングで過ごしたのだと知りました。彼がレディングでの暮らしをなぜそんなに楽しんだのか、その町の美しい風景を見ればすぐわかるでしょう。とても素敵な田舎でニューヨークにも近いのです。
アーティストはそれぞれ作品展に作品を2点そしてポートフォリオ（スタンドなどに入れて展示販売するための額なしの作品群）を応募することができました。この作品展に応募するのに大変だったことは、これから作品展に出すためにずっと描きためていた絵のほとんどが、マサチューセッツ州の家からコネティカット州の仮住まいのアパートに引っ越した時に、長期保管用の倉庫に入られてしまったことです。１０月中旬に引越してきましたから、それらの絵なしで、たった２、３週間で作品展の準備をしなければなりませんでした。
私たちのアパートはダンベリーのとても景色の綺麗な場所にあり、5階に住んでいます。初めて部屋に足を踏み入れた時、窓から見える美しい眺望に驚きました。引っ越し後しばらくして、作品展の題材を決めなければなりませんでした。「そうだ」と私はつぶやきました。「この眺めを作品展の絵ための題材にしよう。」このようにして「ダンベリーの日没」の制作が始まりました。この作品はマサチューセッツ州時代に描いた「横たわるムリィ」とともに作品展に入選しました。
図書館は内装もとても素敵で感心しました。作品の展示の仕方もプロの仕事という感じで、入選した作品はどれも素晴らしいものばかり。様々な媒体やスタイルが見られ、それぞれが質の高い作品でした。これで、ここがアートに鋭い眼を持った富裕層の集まる地域であることがわかりました。
ニューヨークやコネティカットには数多くのアート団体や作品展があります。ペンシルバニア州ウェストチェスターにある昔通っていたアートセンターでも作品を展示し始めました。今後とも絵を描く技術を磨き続け、作品を展示する機会をより多く見つけようと頑張っていくつもりです。これからもどうぞお楽しみに！

Good Bye, Massachusetts and Hello, Connecticut!

I just moved to Danbury, Connecticut from Franklin, Massachusetts in mid-October. It has been a bit crazy before and after the move. I had no time to paint for a while. Now that my little one started going to a new preschool, I finally got time to breathe. This allowed me to look back at the 2.5 years I spent in MA.
The 2.5 years in MA passed in the blink of an eye. Although it was not a very long time, the 2.5 years was the turning point of my life as an artist. When I lived in Pennsylvania before I moved to MA, I was still taking an art class and did not really show my paintings in public. After I moved to MA from PA, I immediately started looking for a landscape painting class just like the one I used to attend in PA. However, I could not find anything like that in my area. Instead of searching for such an art class, I started finding local art organizations which help artists exhibit and sell their art works through art shows.
Rhode Island Watercolor Society (RIWS) was one of such art organizations (Franklin was very close to RI). As soon as I learned that I could be an artist member if my paintings were accepted 3 times in 3 different shows, I started entering my paintings in their open juried shows. Fortunately, my paintings were juried into 3 art shows in a row, so it did not take even a year for me to become an artist member. In January, 2014, I was invited to the RIWS New Member Show, and showed 3 paintings with other new member artists.

I kept entering my art works in the RIWS shows and also other local art shows of other art organizations including Franklin Art Association. I gradually started creating my own “art schedule” such as drop-offs and receptions of various art shows. Every time I entered a new art event on my calendar via iPad, I was so thrilled! The most exciting event I entered was my very first group show in July, 2015. I showed 12 paintings in the group show. It was my last art show before the move to CT.

So far I am enjoying my new life in the Danbury area having found some very interesting local art associations displaying an array of very inspiring works by skilled artists. Hopefully I would also be able to meet these artists soon. In addition, I would like to visit my old art association in West Chester, PA because this is where my art all began.

さようならマサチューセッツ州、こんにちはコネチカット州
１０月の中旬にマサチューセッツ州のフランクリンからコネチカット州のダンベリーに引っ越したばかり。引っ越しの前後はちょっと大変でした。しばらくの間絵を描く時間もありませんでした。子供が新しいプリスクール（日本でいう幼稚園）に通うようになって、やっと一息つけるようになり、ここでマサチューセッツ州で過ごした二年半を振り返ってみようと思います。
マサチューセッツ州での二年半はあっという間に過ぎました。あまり長い間ではありませんでしたが、それは私のアーティストとしての人生の転機でした。マサチューセッツ州に移る前のペンシルバニア州に住んでいた時代、私はまだアートのクラスに通っていて、公の場で自分の作品を発表することはあまりありませんでした。ペンシルベニア州からマサチューセッツ州に移った後すぐ、自分が通っていたような風景画のクラスがないかすぐに探しました。マサチューセッツ州の引っ越し先にはそのようなクラスを見つけられませんでしたが、その代わりに、アーティストが作品を展示したり販売することができる地元のアートの団体を見つけ始めました。
Rhode Island Watercolor Society（RIWS）もそのようなアートの団体でした（フランクリンはロードアイランドの近く）。作品が３回それぞれ違う作品展で入選すれば、アーティスト会員になれると知って、公募の作品展に応募し始めました。幸運にも作品が三回連続入選し、一年もかからずアーティスト会員になることが出来ました。２０１４年一月、新アーティスト会員の作品展に招かれ、他の新メンバーとともに３作品を展示しました。
RIWSの作品展だけでなく、ほかの地元のアートの組織、Franklin Art Associationなどでも出展し続けました。そして徐々に、様々な作品展の作品の提出日やレセプションの日といった「アートスケジュール」を作り始めました。iPadでカレンダーに新しいアートのイベントを書き込む度にとてもわくわくしました！一番わくわくしたのは２０１５年７月のまさに初めてのグループ展をカレンダーに書き込んだ時です。そのグループ展では12作品展示しました。それがコネチカット州に引っ越す前の最後の作品展になりました。
コネチカット州に引っ越してきて、素晴らしいアーティストたちの作品を展示している面白そうなアートの団体をいくつか見つけ、新しい生活を楽しんでいます。近いうちにそのアーティストの方々とも会えたらいいな、と思います。それから、私が昔通っていたペンシルベニア州のウェストチェスターのアート団体も再び訪れたいです。何といっても、そこが私のアートの始まりの場所ですから。

Memories of My Art Teacher, Mary Beaumont

Mary, my art teacher, who taught me landscape painting when I lived in Pennsylvania, passed away last week. Notified via a Facebook post I was very much shocked by this sudden news about her death and had to read this post many times until I knew that it was true. I was fortunate enough to be able to attend her landscape painting class for 5 memorable years.
The colors of my pallet completely changed after I started taking her class. I started using more color variations for painting shadows such as ultramarine and purple. No more black for shadows. She used to say, “There are never enough colors for shadows.”

Mary was such a knowledgeable teacher and never ran out of subjects to share with us. The tone of her voice sounded so calm and comfortable. When I reflected on all the precious teachings in her class, I realized that I learned more than painting from Mary. The most precious thing I learned from her would be “seeing things with love”. I could also call it an attitude towards life in general, which appreciates the beauty of all the living things and the nature in this world.
She was always carrying her sketch book and whenever something caught her eyes, she immediately started sketching. I always looked forward to the moment when she wanted to show her new sketches. Her sketches were usually things in her everyday life. Such as her dogs, cats, views from her friend’s apartment, her favorite pond in her neighborhood and many other subjects. She really found the beauty in everyday subjects and brought them to life in her paintings.
It is not possible for me to believe that I would never be able to see her new sketches or attend her landscape painting classes at our usual locations.
At this point I would like to share a couple of sketches completed during this wonderful and precious time attending Mary’s classes at one of my most favorite places in West Chester, PA. This painting of the red barn incorporates my time as Mary’s student, my memories of Chester County and my gratitude of what I learned.

メアリー・ボウモント先生の思い出
ペンシルバニアに住んでいたときに風景画を習っていた先生であるメアリーが先週亡くなりました。彼女の突然の死の知らせをフェイスブックで知り、それが本当であるとわかるまで何度も読み返さなくてはなりませんでした。思い出深い５年もの間、メアリーの風景画のクラスに通えたことはとても幸運でした。
メアリーのクラスに通うようになって、私のパレットはがらりと変わりました。影を描くのにウルトラマリンやパープルといった様々な色を使うようになりました。影に黒を使うことはもうありませんでした。「影を描くのに色はいくらあっても十分でない。」とメアリーはよく言っていました。
メアリーは知識が豊富な先生で教えることに事欠きませんでした。彼女の声のトーンはとても穏やかで心地良かった。メアリーのクラスで学んだことを振り返ってみると、私は絵を描くこと以上のものを学んだのだと思います。メアリーから学んだ一番大切なことは「愛情を持ってものを見ること」です。それはこの世に生きとし生けるものと自然の美しさに感謝するという、生きる姿勢、と言ってもいいかもしれません。
メアリーはいつもスケッチブックを持ち歩いていて、何か目に留まった時はいつでもすぐにスケッチをし始めました。私はいつもメアリーが新しいスケッチを見せてくれるのが楽しみでした。彼女のスケッチは大抵日常の生活のものを描いていました。自分の飼っている犬、猫、友人のアパートから見た眺め、近所のお気に入りの池、などなど。メアリーは日常の生活でふれるものに美を見出し、絵の中でそれらを活き活きと輝かせました。
もう、メアリーのスケッチを見たり、いつもの場所で風景画のクラスが受けられないなんて信じられません。
では、メアリーのクラスに通っていたかけがえのない貴重な時代に描いたスケッチをお見せしたいと思います。私のペンシルベニア州、ウェストチェスターのお気に入りの場所の一つ。この赤い納屋の絵は私がメアリーの生徒だった時のものであり、チェスターカウンティーの思い出でもあり、私が彼女から学んだことへの感謝の気持ちを表すものでもあります。
メアリー、これらのスケッチ覚えているかな。一緒に絵を描けてとても楽しかったよ。本当にありがとう。安らかにお休み下さい。

Kyoto Autumn Leaves

It has gotten a lot cooler here in Massachusetts. I feel that autumn is approaching slowly. There will be a juried show, “The Artist Travels”, at Rhode Island Watercolor Society in September, so I wanted to paint a beautiful autumn landscape from one of my past trips outside the United States. My Austrian husband is a big fan of Japan, so he suggested that it should be nice “Koyo” (meaning “autumn leaves” in Japanese) in Japan. I agreed with the idea, and then I had to think of what would be the most typical Japanese autumn landscape, which also looks very Japanese or at least Asian for non-Japanese people.
It was just like a word-association game when I was trying to come up with the subject to paint.
Travels → Autumn → Japan → Kyoto → Kiyomizu Temple
Kiyomizu Temple is probably the most popular temple in Japan because of the scenic view. If you look under the pavilions, you will notice that there are pillars behind the leaves. The height between the floor of the main pavilion and the ground is 13 meters or about 43 feet. Because of the height, the view from the temple is outstanding in all seasons. I have been there a couple of times, but the temple was always packed with tourists not only from other parts of Japan but also from all over the world.
To paint the beauty of the autumn leaves was one thing, but I also wanted to paint the beauty of the temple and the happy crowds of tourists enjoying the beautiful autumn landscape. I enjoyed using a Hake brush to paint the sky and a Saishiki brush to paint leaves in the front. I bought these Japanese brushes to practice “sumie”, but they are also pretty useful in watercolor paintings.
I hope you will enjoy one of the most popular autumn landscapes in Japan by looking at my painting. I feel very proud that I am from such a beautiful country.

ここマサチューセッツ州はかなり涼しくなりました。秋がゆっくり近づいているのを感じます。九月にRhode Island Watercolor Societyで“The Artist Travels”という展覧会があるので、アメリカ国外を旅行したときの美しい秋の風景を描こうと思いました。私のオーストリア人の夫は日本が大好きなので、日本の紅葉がいいよ、と提案。いい考えだと思い、一番典型的な日本の秋の風景って何かなあ、と考えました。しかも、日本人でない人にとってもすごく日本的に、あるいは少なくともアジアっぽく見える風景。
題材を思いつこうと考えている時はまるで連想ゲームのようでした。
旅行→秋→日本→京都→清水寺
清水寺はその景色の素晴らしさゆえおそらく日本で一番人気のある寺でしょう。寺のお堂の下をみると、紅葉の後ろに隠れて柱があるのがわかりますね。地面から本堂の床までは１３メートルの高さがあります。その高さのため、寺からの眺めは四季を通じて他に類を見ない美しさです。私は数回行ったことがありますが、清水寺はいつも日本各地からの旅行者だけでなく世界中から来た旅行者で一杯でした。
紅葉の美を描くことも一つですが、その寺の美しさや紅葉を見て楽しんでいる幸せな旅行者たちの群れも描きたいと思いました。空を描くのに刷毛を、手前の葉を描くのに彩色筆を使いました。それらの日本の筆は墨絵を練習するために買ったのですが、水彩画を描くにも役に立っています。
私の絵をみて日本で最も人気のある秋の風景の一つをお楽しみください。こんな美しい国の出身であることを大変誇りに思います。

Remembering my 2010 Kyushu Trip

Kyushu was hit by record rainfall this summer! I watched the recent news on the heavy rain in mid July, which brought back memories of my trip there in 2010.
Kyushu is not part of “Honshu ( the mainland of Japan)”, but the largest Japanese southern island. The nature there looks very unique, compared to other parts of Japan. There are a number of volcanos throughout Kyushu. My husband and I hiked on one of these volcanos in Kirishima, and saw the volcano lake, called “Oonaminoike”. It was such an amazing moment when I reached the top of the mountain and saw this wonderful emerald green water! I wish I could experience the same moment again. Well, it is not so easy now because I have a small child. Instead of visiting there I decided to paint this breathtaking landscape so that I can always remember it. Here it is.

Ibusuki was another memorable place in Kyushu. While Kirishima has great hot springs like so many other places in Kyushu, Ibusuki has a very unique way of using the medicinal benefits of hot springs. It is called, “Sunaburo”, which means “Sand Bath”. It was quite an experience when I was “buried” under the wet, warm sand at the beach heated by hot springs underneath.
Walking along the seaside in Ibusuki was also very exciting. There was a great art museum in the middle of the walk called, “Satsuma Denshokan”. The museum was part of this hotel, “Hakusuikan”, and all the exhibits there were the collections of the current hotel owner and his father. There were many great art items made out of porcelain, which were produced in Satsuma (southern part of Kyushu) in the 19th century. I was particularly fascinated by a delicate cream color of “Shiro Satuma”. Shiro means white in Japanese, but it was a very warm ivory color. My husband and I ended the museum visit with a visit to a nice Italian restaurant inside the museum enjoying the delicious food!
After our visit to this beautiful museum we kept walking along the seaside. It was still a long way to get to our final destination, a small island called, “Chiringashima”. We could walk to the island because it was still low tide. The sand path to the island was quite long. I did not know that there used to be a base of the Imperial Japanese Navy during the World War II in the area, but this beautiful location made me forget this thought very quickly. The winding paths on this little island and lush vegetation gave it a very fairy tale like feeling. Might there be any goblins hidden somewhere behind the next bush?
In my painting. “Dreaming of Ibusuki”, I tried to express the mysteriousness of the green bushes of the island.

Back at the current time I hope that Kyushu will stay safe for a while after surviving the heavy recent rains.

この夏、九州は記録的な豪雨に襲われました。７月の中旬に大雨のニュースを見ていて、2010年に九州を旅行したときのことを思い出しました。
九州は本州の一部ではなく、日本で最も大きな南の島です。日本の他の場所に比べて、自然もとても独特です。九州には数多くの火山があります。夫と私は霧島連山の一つの火山に登り、「大浪池」という火山湖を見ました。山の頂上に着き、この素晴らしいエメラルドグリーンの水面を目にした時は感動の瞬間でした。もう一度同じ瞬間を体験出来たならいいのですが。今は小さい子供がいるので、なかなかそうもいきません。なので、私が思わず息を呑んだその風景を描いてみることにしました。さあ、こちらです。
指宿も思い出深い場所です。霧島にも九州の数多くの場所と同様に、素晴らしい温泉がありましたが、指宿は温泉の医学的効用を大変変わった方法で利用していました。砂風呂と呼ばれてるものです。温泉が地下に湧いているビーチの濡れた砂で「埋められた」のはなかなか味わえない経験でした。
指宿の海沿いを散策するのも大変面白かったです。散策の途中で、「薩摩伝承館」という素晴らしい美術館を見つけました。その美術館は「白水館」というホテルの一部で、全ての展示物がそのホテルの現在のオーナーとお父様のコレクションでした。19世紀に薩摩で生産された多くの素晴らしい陶磁器がありました。私は特に「白薩摩」の繊細なクリーム色に魅せられました。白という名前がついていますが、とても温かみのあるアイボリー色をしていました。夫と私は最後に美術館にある素敵なイタリアンレストランに行き、美術館を後にしました。食事もすごく美味しかった！
美術館の後も、海沿いを歩き続けました。私たちの最終目的地である「知林ヶ島」という小さな島までは、まだ長い道のりでした。まだ、干潮時だったので、その島まで歩いて行けました。その島までの砂の道はかなり長かったです。知らなかったのですが、その辺りは第二次世界大戦中に帝国海軍の基地として使われていたそうなんです。でも、この島の美しさを見るとそんなことも吹っ飛んでしまいました。島の曲がりくねった道や鬱蒼とした茂みを見ていると物語の世界にいるかのような感じでした。あちらの茂みには天狗でもかくれているんじゃないかしら？なんて。
この“ Dreaming of Ibusuki”という絵で、その島の茂みのミステリアスな感じを表現しようと試みました。
大雨が終わって、九州がしばらくの間は安全でありますように。

“Summer Garden” Plein Air or Studio Painting?

How are you enjoying summer? It is a prime time for Plein Air painters. I started painting landscapes with an art teacher who was a Plein Air painter, so this style used to be my primary style. Even though I still believe that Plein Air painting is the best way to express direct response to the scene you see right in front of you, I sometimes have to choose “studio painting” because mother nature does not always cooperate allowing me to paint outside. I prefer “studio painting” when I want to spend more time working on my painting with a larger degree of control over what I really would like to paint. I also have more time to plan and stop to reflect on the current painting.

I recently participated in a Plein Air event in Blithewold Mansion, Gardens, and Arboretum with Rhode Island Watercolor Society. It was a perfect sunny day, but I arrived there a little bit later than other artists because I had to take my little one to her music class in the morning. As a result, all nice shady spots with great views of flower beds and a stone arch were already taken by other artists, and there were very few choices left for me to paint. I made a sketch in a nice shady spot with a relatively nice view, but that was not what I really wanted to paint.
The painting venue had a really nice flower garden. One of the garden beds had a very interesting star-like shaped plant. I was fascinated by the shape of the plant and the beautiful layout of the entire flower bed. When I googled at home, I learned that it is called “Ornamental Onion”. To paint the flower bed with the Ornamental Onion, I had to paint in a spot with full sunshine. I tried a little bit, but I could not really see my paper because of the sun reflection! It was too bright. I understood why Cezanne had someone who held an umbrella right next to him while he was painting. Since I did not have such luxury to have someone like that, I gave up and decided to take a photo of the view I wanted to paint.
It was much more challenging than I thought to paint from the photo. I had to stop and step back many times to check if the contrast of lights and shadows worked well. Usually, because I do not see exactly the same colors in photos compared to the ones on location, especially lights and shadows, I allow myself to paint from a photo only after seeing the view with my own eyes. When I paint from a photo, I also use my memory about the location believing that it is very important to express the atmosphere of the scene and reflect feelings developed while at the location.
Looking at this painting I hope you will feel that I was painting on location on a very nice summer day in Rhode Island. Please enjoy these beautiful summer flowers!

夏をいかがお過ごしですか？戸外で描くアーティストにとっては今は絶好の時期。私は戸外で描くスタイルの先生に風景画を教わったので、戸外で描くのが私の主なスタイルでした。今でも戸外で描くのが、目の前の風景を見て直に感じたことを表現するのに一番良い方法だ、と思いますが、母なる自然がいつも味方してくれるとは限らないので、時には屋内で描かざるをえないこともあります。自分が描きたいものをより思った通りに描くためにもっとじっくり時間をかけたい時には屋内で描く方が好きです。どうやって描くか考えたり、描きながら手を止めて見直したりする時間ももっと持てます。
先日、Rhode Island Watercolor Societyを通じてBlithewold Mansion, Gardens, and Arboretumにて戸外で絵を描くイベントに参加しました。完璧な晴天の日でしたが、子供を午前中音楽のクラスに連れて行かなければならなかったので、他のアーティストより少し遅れて到着しました。そのため、花壇と石のアーチが見える眺めの良い日陰の場所は他のアーティストに取られてしまい、残された場所はあまりありませんでした。比較的いい眺めの日陰の場所でスケッチをしましたが、それは自分が本当に描きたいものではありませんでした。イベントの場所にはすごく素敵なフラワーガーデンがありました。その花壇の一つに星のような形をしたとても面白い植物がありました。私はその植物の形とその花壇の美しいレイアウトに魅せられました。家でGoogleで検索してみると、”Ornamental Onion (アリウムギガンチューム）”と呼ばれていることがわかりました。そのOrnamental Onionのある花壇を描くには陽がさんさんと照っている場所で描かなければなりませんでした。少し頑張ってみましたが、紙が太陽の反射であまり見えないのです！眩しすぎました。なぜセザンヌが絵を描く時に隣に傘を持った人を立たせていたのか理解出来ました。私にはそんな人を持つ贅沢は許されなかったので、諦めて自分の描きたかった光景を写真に収めました。
その写真を見ながら描くのは思ったよりも手がかかりました。光と影のコントラストがちゃんと効いているか何度も筆を置いて、確かめなければなりませんでした。写真の色は現場で見た色とは、特に光と影の色が、同じではありません。その光景を自分の目で見たことがある時だけ、写真を見ながら描くことにしています。その場の空気感やその場にいた時にわき上がってきた感情などを表現するのがとても大切だと思っているので、自分の記憶も使って描くようにしています。この絵を見て、私がロードアイランドの夏のとても晴れた日に、その場にいて描いたかのように感じてくれたらいいな、と思います。これらの美しい夏の花を見て楽しんで下さい。

2014 Spring Member Exhibition (5/17 – 5/18) – Franklin Art Association

It was the second time that I participated in the member exhibition of my local art association, Franklin Art Association. Every artist was allowed to enter two pieces. I showed “Cuddly Time” and “Spring in Kobe “. I was too new in the last member show to talk to other member artists, but this time I got to talk to some great art members.

I received a good advice from a watercolor artist/teacher on “Spring in Kobe”. I might redo the painting with some changes based on the advice. Another watercolorist said she liked the painting because it is very soft.
The other painting, “Cuddly Time” also received positive comments. People thought that my cats looked great with very detailed strokes.
It was great to hear comments from other artists and visitors who saw my paintings with their fresh eyes. There is always something I learn every time I exhibit my paintings and talk to other people. The gallery was also very nice. We were fortunate to have such a nice space at Dean College, our local performing arts school. Please enjoy some photos of the show!

２０１４ 春のメンバー作品展 （5/17-5/18) ー Franklin Art Association
私の地元のアートの団体、Franklin Art Associationの作品展に参加するのはこれが二度目でした。アーティストはそれぞれ２作品ずつ展示することができました。わたしは“Cuddly Time”と“Spring in Kobe “の２点を展示。この間の作品展ではまだ新しすぎて、他のアーティストとお話出来ませんでしたが、今回は何人かの素晴らしいアーティストと話をすることが出来ました。
“Spring in Kobe “について水彩画のアーティスト／講師の方から良いアドバイスをもらいました。そのアドバイスに基づいて、またその絵を描き直すかもしれません。別の水彩画家の方は“Spring in Kobe “のとてもソフトな感じが良いと言って下さいました。
“Cuddly Time”の方も良いコメントを頂きました。とても細かい筆致で素晴らしいと言われました。私の絵を新鮮な目で見てくださった他のアーティストやお客さんからコメントを聞くのはためになることでした。自分の絵を展示して他の人と話すたびにいつも何か学ぶことがあります。ギャラリーも大変素敵でした。地元の舞台芸術の学校、ディーンカレッジでこのような良い場所を使うことができて幸運でした。作品展で撮った写真をどうぞご覧下さい。

“Cats Shelf” – Happy Meowthday!

Today is the 5th birthday of my dearest twin cats, Murli & Schnurli. Here is a big meow from me, “MEOOOOW”. I already discovered a dead field mouse in my bed room today. OK. This is how they cerebrate their birthday. Well, if that is the case, I should cerebrate their birthday by painting something for them because I am an artist.

I usually paint landscape, but I also enjoy painting my cats once in a while. I think I use pretty much the same techniques as in landscape painting when I paint cats. It is just that I use fewer colors. I paint a lot of layers of colors because I care about depth of colors and texture of the subject. I usually start with base layers of French Ochre, Burnt Sienna, and Raw Umber in painting cats. The same way I start with a nature landscape painting. Strong shadows with thicker, darker paint plays a very important role in nature landscape painting to show “depth” and make it look like 3D. When I paint my black tabby cats, emphasizing darker fur by applying thicker darker paint does the same effect. I usually use Neutral Tint and Sepia for their dark fur.” Wet on Wet” technique is often used to paint the sky and water in landscape painting. The same technique is used in painting stripes of my tabby cats by applying a relatively dry brush with thick paint on a wet surface. Then, the stripe pattern nicely blends into the entire fur. After finishing all these steps, my cats would look almost real, but I still have to do the final trick to make their fur look soft and fluffy. Applying a dry brush with Zinc White to paint fine hair does give a nice furry texture. Et Voila! Please enjoying “feeling” their soft fur, cuddliness and playfulness by “seeing” this painting.

今日は私の双子の猫ちゃんたち、ムーリィとシュヌーリィの５歳の誕生日。ここで私からの雄叫びを一発。「ミャオオオオー」。今日すでに私の寝室で死んでいる野ネズミを発見。オーケー。これが猫らの誕生日の祝い方か。では、私の場合はアーティストだから、何か描いて誕生日のお祝いをしましょう。
私は風景画を大抵描きますが、たまに自分の猫の絵を描くのも楽しんでいます。猫を描く時も、風景画を描くのとほとんど同じテクニックを使っているかと思います。ただ、使う色が少なくなるのが違うだけですね。私は描く対象の色の深みや質感を大切にするので、たくさん色を重ねます。猫を描く時、まず、ベースとなる色、フレンチオーカー、バーントシエンナやローアンバーなどから塗り始めます。自然の風景を描くときと同じやり方です。濃いめの調合（水少なめで絵の具を多めに）で、暗い色の絵の具で描いた強い色調の影は自然の風景を描く時「深み」を表し、３Dのように見せるのにとても重要な役割を果たします。私の黒いトラ猫を描く時も、黒い毛を強調するのに濃いめ調合で暗めの色の絵の具を使って同じような効果を出します。黒い毛にはいつもニュートラルティントとセピアを使っています。「ウェットオンウェット(にじみ技法）」のテクニックも風景画において空や水を描くのによく使われますが、猫の縞模様を描く時にも使います。ぬれたままの表面に、濃いめの調合で比較的ドライな筆で塗るのです。すると、縞模様がいい感じで、毛全体になじんでいきます。これらのステップを終えて、私の猫ちゃんもほとんど本物みたいに見えることでしょう。でも、猫の毛をふわふわに見せるためにまだ最後の技が残っています。ジンクホワイトを使ってドライな筆で細い毛を描くと、毛のフワフワ感が生まれるのです。ほら、出来ました！この絵を「見て」猫ちゃんたちの柔らかな毛や愛くるしさや遊び心を「感じて」楽しんでください。
また改めまして、猫ちゃん誕生日おめでとう！私に芸術的なインスピレーションをたくさん与えてくれてありがとう。

Mother’s Day in Provincetown, Cape Cod, MA

Did you already plan anything for Mother’s Day? This is how we spent our Mother’s Day last year. My husband, my daughter (one year old back then) and I went to my most favorite town in Cape Cod, Provincetown, which is the America’s oldest continuous art colony. It was not quite a gallery season yet. There were not many galleries which were open. Fortunately, I found Packard Gallery was open. There were very limited selections of Anne Packard’s paintings and I was the only visitor. I just had a small conversation with somebody at the gallery and looked at some catalogues of Anne Packard’s paintings. Then, I suddenly heard my daughter crying outside. Oh yes, she was hungry! Time to eat lunch! We went to our usual place, the Lobster Pot Restaurant. My daughter was not quite interested in food because the ocean view from the restaurant looked more attractive. We had to leave as soon as we finished our beer and food.
She was so excited when we finally went to the beach and kept running around. While I was chasing her at the beach, I found another gallery was open. It was also one of the galleries I usually visited, the only gallery in Provincetown which stands at the beach. It looks more like a shack rather than a gallery. I like to go there because it doesn’t look like an art gallery at all without a sign and the people who sit at the gallery are also kind of off-beat. I walked inside and looked around. Nothing changed from the last time. I talked about Anne Packard with a man at the counter and a lady who was sitting on a chair for a while. They knew the time before she became famous, when she was selling her small paintings at the beach for only $10 or $20. While I was enjoying my last gallery visit, my little one was waiting for me outside the gallery.

It was the first beach experience for her and also the very first Mother’s Day for me as a mom. We are going to have another memorable Mother’s Day this year. I hope you will have a happy Mother’s Day, too!

母の日 マサチューセッツ州、ケープコッドのプロビンスタウンにて
もう母の日の予定は立てましたか？去年、私たちは母の日をこんなふうに過ごしました。夫と娘（当時一才）と私は私がケープコッドで一番好きな町プロビンスタウンに行きました。そこはアメリカで最も長く続いているアートコロニー(芸術家村)なのです。まだギャラリーのシーズンではなく、あまり開いているギャラリーはありませんでした。幸いなことにパッカードギャラリーは開いていました。アン・パッカードの絵も限られたものしかなく、お客は私一人でした。ギャラリーの人とちょっと話をしてアン・パッカードのカタログをいくつか見せてもらいました。その時、突然外から泣き声が。そうです。子供のお腹が空いたのです！ランチの時間！私たちはいつもの場所、ロブスターポットレストランへ行きました。娘はレストランから見えるオーシャンビューの方に気を取られてしまい、食べ物に興味なし。私たちはビール飲み、食事を済ませると、すぐに席を立ちました。娘はやっとビーチにたどり着いたときには大喜びで、そこら中を駆け回りました。娘をビーチで追いかけていると、また別のギャラリーが開いているのを発見。それは、私がいつも訪れるギャラリーの一つでした。プロビンスタウンで唯一ビーチに立っているギャラリー。ギャラリーというよりは、小屋って感じですが。私がそこに行くのが好きなのはなぜかというと、看板なしだとギャラリーだとわからないというのとギャラリーに座っている人たちがちょっと変わっているからです。私はギャラリーの中に入り、中を見回しました。この間と何も変わっていない。私はカウンターにいた男性と椅子に座っていた女性とアン・パッカードの話をしばらくしました。その人たちはアンが有名になる前のこと、ビーチでたった＄１０とか＄２０で小さな絵を売っていた時代も知っていました。私が最後のギャラリーの訪問を楽しんでいる間、私の娘はギャラリーの外で私を待っていました。
それは娘にとってビーチで遊んだ初めての経験で、私にとっては母親として初めての母の日でした。今年もまた思い出に残る母の日を過ごすのを楽しみにしています。あなたも幸せな母の日を過ごせますように！

“Inner Voice”

I got an inspiration to paint this subject when I saw a Bishamonten (Buddhist deity) statue at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The statue was exhibited with other Buddhist statues in a very dimly lit room. The lighting resulted in a very dramatic shadow, which almost looked like another statue behind the Bishamonten. I was amazed by the contrast between the statue and the shadow. The image left a strong impression, which urged me to produce this painting. Hopefully it would leave the same impression with you.

ボストン美術館で毘沙門天の像を見て、この題材を描こうとひらめきました。毘沙門天像は薄暗い部屋に他の仏像と共に展示されていました。そのライティングの効果で、あたかも毘沙門天の後ろにまた別の像がいるかのような劇的な影が映っていました。毘沙門天とその影のコントラストに驚嘆し、強い印象が残り、この絵を描かずにはいられませんでした。あなたにもこの絵が同じような印象を残しますように。
