2014 Fall Member Exhibition (11/15-11/16) – Franklin Art Association

My husband, my 3 year-old daughter and I all went to the art show and met many other member artists and their families. What a great weekend! We moved to this town, Franklin, Massachusetts in April, 2013. My husband (he does photography) and I became members of this local art association a little while after the move. Since this was the third time that we joined their member show, more member artists recognized us and said “Hi” with a smile. Isn’t it such a moment that you feel like you are considered a “local” when more people start saying “Hi” and want to have a little conversation with you?
When we moved here, we did not know anybody. I just missed my old place and friends in Pennsylvania and lived in tears almost every day. I also stopped painting until my husband advised me to start painting again. Soon after I decided to do so, I found these great local art organizations such as Rhode Island Watercolor Society and Franklin Art Association.

It was a great honor for me to exhibit my paintings right next to award winning artists’ works! All the art works at the show were such high quality. It really motivates me to strive harder when I see excellent art works done by other artists. Some artists talked to my husband and me and said they liked our works. When artists praise other artists’ works, they really mean it. Artists are honest! This is a big difference compared to people in the corporate world.
Their fall exhibitions are not only for member artists to show and sell their art works, but also for raising money for students who would like to study at art schools. My husband and I also contributed to their scholarship funds by giving donations and buying raffles. Franklin Art Association is truly a community organization. I am very proud that my husband and I could join such a great organization.

夫と三歳の娘と一緒に展覧会に行き、たくさんのメンバーのアーティストやその家族の方々と会いました。なんて素晴らしい週末だったことでしょう！私たちは2013年の四月にマサチューセッツ州のフランクリンという街に引っ越してきました。夫（写真をやります）と私は引っ越してしばらくして、この地元のアートの団体のメンバーになりました。展覧会に参加するのは今回が三回目でしたので、前よりも多くのメンバーの方々が私たちの顔を見て笑顔で挨拶してくれました。より多くの人が挨拶してくれるようになったり、ちょっとした会話をしてくれるようになったりした時、地元の人間だと思われるようになったんだなあ、と感じませんか？
ここに引っ越してきた時は誰も知っている人がいませんでした。私はただペンシルバニアの前に住んでいた場所や友達が恋しくて毎日のように泣き暮れていました。絵を描くこともしばらくやめてしまいました。夫がもう一度描き始めるようにと言ってくれるまでは。また絵を描き始めてから、ほどなくして、Rhode Island Watercolor SocietyやFranklin Art Associationといった素晴らしい地元のアートの団体を見つけました。
賞をとるようなアーティストのすぐ隣に自分の絵を展示することができて本当に光栄でした。展覧会の作品はどれも質の高いものばかりでした。他のアーティストの素晴らしい作品を見ると、もっと頑張ろうという気になります。夫と私に作品良かったね、と言ってくれたアーティストもいました。アーティストが他のアーティストの作品をほめる時というのは、本気で言っているのです。アーティストは正直です！企業の世界の人と比べるとこれが大きな違いですね。
秋の展覧会はメンバーが作品を展示販売するためだけではなく、美術学校で勉強したいという学生さんのためにお金を集めるという目的もあります。私と夫も奨学金基金にお金を寄付したり、ラフルという番号の付いたくじを買ったりして協力しました。Franklin Art Association は本当に地域に根差した団体です。夫と私もそのような素晴らしい団体の一員になれたことを誇りに思います。

“Home Sweet Tokyo” – An Evening Walk in Asakusa

This painting, “Home Sweet Tokyo”, was juried into “Cityscape” show at Post Road Art Center in Marlborough, Massachusetts and will be on display from Oct. 2 to Oct. 29. I think I was the only one who painted a Tokyo cityscape in the show.
Tokyo is a showcase of super modern sky scrapers. You will find the most cutting-edge technologies, top-notch restaurants and the latest fashion; however there are some parts of Tokyo which still have good, old Japanese ambience. I really appreciate these places because I don’t see many chain-restaurants or stores. I would see more traditional family-owned restaurants and stores instead. Those historical places have a lot of personality and make me feel like I am back home.
Asakusa is one of those places. Sensoji Temple is the most famous there. I went to the temple for New Year’s cerebrations with my husband and my daughter (she was only 6 months back then) two years ago. After the temple visit, we were browsing shopping streets and then ended up in this old bar district. There were many small bars, squeezed into a very narrow space. These Japanese style bars are called, “izakaya”, in Japanese. The lights of those izakayas looked so warm through the plastic see-through curtains and the customers sitting so close to each other created a very friendly atmosphere. In a good, old izakaya everybody is friendly and happy. Food is inexpensive and tasty.
I hope I could express the warm, happy, and friendly ambience that I felt there. Lastly, but not the least important, did you notice that I painted myself in this painting? Let me know when you know.

この作品、”Home Sweet Tokyo”がマサチューセッツ州、マルボロのポストロードアートセンターの “Cityscape (街の風景）” という作品展に選ばれ、１０/２から１０/２９まで展示されることになりました。その作品展で東京の街の風景を描いたのは私一人のようですが。
東京は超モダンな高層ビルが林立し、最先端のテクノロジーや超一流のレストランや最新ファッションが見つけられる街。それでも、未だに古き良き日本の雰囲気が残る地域もあるのです。そういう地域ではチェーン店のレストランやお店があまりないので、私はとてもありがたく思います。チェーン店ではなく、昔ながらの家族経営のレストランやお店があります。そういう古い地域にはとても個性があり、そのような場所に行くと、帰ってきた、という気持ちになります。
浅草もそういった地域の一つです。浅草寺が一番有名ですね。私は二年前夫と当時ほんの六か月だった娘とお正月のお祝いに浅草寺に行きました。お寺に行った後、商店街をぶらぶらし、それからこの古びた飲み屋のある通りに辿り着きました。狭い空間に多くの小さな飲み屋が押し込められるように立っていました。このような日本のスタイルのバーは日本語で「居酒屋」と呼ばれています。それらの居酒屋の灯りが透明のビニールカーテン越しにとても温かく見え、隣の人と引っ付かんばかりの距離で座っているお客さんたちがとてもフレンドリーな雰囲気を作っていました。古き良き居酒屋ではみなフレンドリーで幸せそうで、食べ物も安くておいしいのです。
私がその場で感じた温かくて幸せそうでフレンドリーな雰囲気が表現できたといいのですが。最後に一言。この絵に自分を描いてみたのですがおわかりになりましたか？わかったら教えてくださいね。

Kyoto Autumn Leaves

It has gotten a lot cooler here in Massachusetts. I feel that autumn is approaching slowly. There will be a juried show, “The Artist Travels”, at Rhode Island Watercolor Society in September, so I wanted to paint a beautiful autumn landscape from one of my past trips outside the United States. My Austrian husband is a big fan of Japan, so he suggested that it should be nice “Koyo” (meaning “autumn leaves” in Japanese) in Japan. I agreed with the idea, and then I had to think of what would be the most typical Japanese autumn landscape, which also looks very Japanese or at least Asian for non-Japanese people.
It was just like a word-association game when I was trying to come up with the subject to paint.
Travels → Autumn → Japan → Kyoto → Kiyomizu Temple
Kiyomizu Temple is probably the most popular temple in Japan because of the scenic view. If you look under the pavilions, you will notice that there are pillars behind the leaves. The height between the floor of the main pavilion and the ground is 13 meters or about 43 feet. Because of the height, the view from the temple is outstanding in all seasons. I have been there a couple of times, but the temple was always packed with tourists not only from other parts of Japan but also from all over the world.
To paint the beauty of the autumn leaves was one thing, but I also wanted to paint the beauty of the temple and the happy crowds of tourists enjoying the beautiful autumn landscape. I enjoyed using a Hake brush to paint the sky and a Saishiki brush to paint leaves in the front. I bought these Japanese brushes to practice “sumie”, but they are also pretty useful in watercolor paintings.
I hope you will enjoy one of the most popular autumn landscapes in Japan by looking at my painting. I feel very proud that I am from such a beautiful country.

ここマサチューセッツ州はかなり涼しくなりました。秋がゆっくり近づいているのを感じます。九月にRhode Island Watercolor Societyで“The Artist Travels”という展覧会があるので、アメリカ国外を旅行したときの美しい秋の風景を描こうと思いました。私のオーストリア人の夫は日本が大好きなので、日本の紅葉がいいよ、と提案。いい考えだと思い、一番典型的な日本の秋の風景って何かなあ、と考えました。しかも、日本人でない人にとってもすごく日本的に、あるいは少なくともアジアっぽく見える風景。
題材を思いつこうと考えている時はまるで連想ゲームのようでした。
旅行→秋→日本→京都→清水寺
清水寺はその景色の素晴らしさゆえおそらく日本で一番人気のある寺でしょう。寺のお堂の下をみると、紅葉の後ろに隠れて柱があるのがわかりますね。地面から本堂の床までは１３メートルの高さがあります。その高さのため、寺からの眺めは四季を通じて他に類を見ない美しさです。私は数回行ったことがありますが、清水寺はいつも日本各地からの旅行者だけでなく世界中から来た旅行者で一杯でした。
紅葉の美を描くことも一つですが、その寺の美しさや紅葉を見て楽しんでいる幸せな旅行者たちの群れも描きたいと思いました。空を描くのに刷毛を、手前の葉を描くのに彩色筆を使いました。それらの日本の筆は墨絵を練習するために買ったのですが、水彩画を描くにも役に立っています。
私の絵をみて日本で最も人気のある秋の風景の一つをお楽しみください。こんな美しい国の出身であることを大変誇りに思います。
